I loved the journey that this book took me on。 Although the ending was different than what I expected, the art was beautiful and the relationships between characters was fantastic。

A very beautiful graphic novel。 Thoroughly enjoyed the first half of the book, but the pacing felt a little off in the second。A touching story of the importance of found family set in a unique world。The ending was, perhaps, a little cookie-cutter clichéd for my tastes, but the rest of the story was compelling。

Note to self: listen more to bf when he recommends sapphic scifi graphic novels because this book was a masterpiece

This was such a unique world without overdoing its lore or its breadth。 There is such heart in every character, there is such thought to all action, and it's set against what is visually one of my favorite places in literature。 Space, in all its infinite void, is outside every window; sometimes it's just seemingly endless nothing dotted with stars, sometimes it's magnificent and surreal cosmos gleaming in a storm of rich colors。 You see it from your vehicle (that looks like a koi), you see it fr This was such a unique world without overdoing its lore or its breadth。 There is such heart in every character, there is such thought to all action, and it's set against what is visually one of my favorite places in literature。 Space, in all its infinite void, is outside every window; sometimes it's just seemingly endless nothing dotted with stars, sometimes it's magnificent and surreal cosmos gleaming in a storm of rich colors。 You see it from your vehicle (that looks like a koi), you see it from your dorm room, you see it in your dreams。 You're rooting for everyone, whether it's finding love or finding peace。 Everyone has a stake in the world。 。。。more

Oh, it was sad to see this one go。 It was dream-like。 I feel like I've mentioned that in another review recently。 Maybe it's just my state of mind lately。 At first I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to immerse myself in the story。 Silly me。 The drawings are beautiful, but the story pulled me through so quickly that I confess I didn't always stop to appreciate them as much as I probably should have。 Maybe another pass through before I return it to the library。。。 Oh, it was sad to see this one go。 It was dream-like。 I feel like I've mentioned that in another review recently。 Maybe it's just my state of mind lately。 At first I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to immerse myself in the story。 Silly me。 The drawings are beautiful, but the story pulled me through so quickly that I confess I didn't always stop to appreciate them as much as I probably should have。 Maybe another pass through before I return it to the library。。。 。。。more

It starts quite confusing - I didn't understand if Mia was leaving the building (later to be revealed as the boarding school) or arriving。 Also, for the first 50 pages or so, I had a hard time identifying characters (bad joke - maybe because they are most equally non-binary)。The world building is awesome - a Bradburyesque space where one can breathe。Quite extensive display of lgbtq - with only lesbian relationships depicted - Char and Alma, Grace and Mia, "Do your moms know?", "live with my moms It starts quite confusing - I didn't understand if Mia was leaving the building (later to be revealed as the boarding school) or arriving。 Also, for the first 50 pages or so, I had a hard time identifying characters (bad joke - maybe because they are most equally non-binary)。The world building is awesome - a Bradburyesque space where one can breathe。Quite extensive display of lgbtq - with only lesbian relationships depicted - Char and Alma, Grace and Mia, "Do your moms know?", "live with my moms" which definitely doesn't pass the (invert) Bechedel test - only one male-looking (named?) character as far as I remember, one who doesn't speak, and identifies as "they" - Elliot (called "Ell")。 The first (clearly male) character - Mattie, appears at page 。。。198。 Nope - at page 200 it seems Mattie too is a girl - "She can stay"Ok - 200 something pages into it, I finally realize, EVERYBODY is female。Story: * quite young-adult/naïve, absurd/excessive use of the "I will do anything for love" tropeArt: *** very good architecture, not so good charactersWorld-Building: *** I enjoyed the unexplained being-able-to-breathe-in-space and all-women society 。。。more

I read this in literally 8 hours。 Lost sleep because of it。 And I do not regret a thing。This is a gorgeous world。 Unlike any I have ever seen。 It is an imaginative, unorthodox universe that is parallel but so far away to our current reality。A space world that looks like deep sea! I mean, for all we know there is no difference, right? The ships look like fish! The boarding schools float around like planets! Restoring ancient space architecture with a team of loving, caring, queer individuals is a rewarding and reliable job! An adventure, a pursuit in the name of young love! Wow。Everything about this story was engaging, captivating, and just plain stellar work。 Will probably reread it several times within the coming months, just because。 。。。more

Beautifully illustrated graphic novel about a ragtag crew up to no good in space。 The story feels a little bit slapped together and I don't exactly know how some things will end, but it's lovely and endearing。 Beautifully illustrated graphic novel about a ragtag crew up to no good in space。 The story feels a little bit slapped together and I don't exactly know how some things will end, but it's lovely and endearing。 。。。more

This book is absolutely fantastic。 Great big universe to explore, a small but tight-knit group of characters with complex relationships to each other, two dual narratives as we switch between Mia's school life and her current job on the crew。。。 and of course Tillie Walden's beautiful artwork。 The colours in this were my favourite part, often glowing and making the page almost surreal with how the settings light up。 This book is absolutely fantastic。 Great big universe to explore, a small but tight-knit group of characters with complex relationships to each other, two dual narratives as we switch between Mia's school life and her current job on the crew。。。 and of course Tillie Walden's beautiful artwork。 The colours in this were my favourite part, often glowing and making the page almost surreal with how the settings light up。 。。。more

3。5 starsTillie Walden's comics are cerebral, fascinating works of art。 Sometimes I get so caught up in the background images that I don't notice what's going on right in front of me, and I think that's intentional? I thought ON A SUNBEAM managed to handle both dual stories masterfully。 I liked both and thought they were well thought out。 There was the camaraderie with Mia's found family in a small space crew who clean up planets for new projects (re: space gentrification) and the isolating yet hopefulness of her boarding school--where she meets and falls in love with Grace, a new girl。 If I had to pick one favorite timeline though, it would be the one with the ship's crew。 I loved their dynamic and how they cared for each other。 Jules was a hoot and Ell was precious。 The worlds they visited were pretty cool。I thought some of the characters (particularly Grace) could have used more development。 It is rewarding to see Mia come into her own at the end though。 While I was pulled in with the stories, because of the surreal aspect of the whole book, sometimes I had no idea what was going on。 The main issue I could not tell the characters apart at times。 Even with different names, personalities, and even hair styles and skin tones, all the characters are drawn the same: same face shape, eyes, noses。 Kind of hard to think you're reading about one person when, in fact, you're reading about someone else。 But I will continue to read Tillie Walden's works because her ideas are so surreal and hypnotic。 。。。more

I picked this up randomly while I was looking for something else。 And I didn't fully read the blurb before I started it so I wasn't sure what was going on (and I still don't。 Backstory mainly。 I got the going to find Grace bit)。This is still a good book though。 Well illustrated even though I found the writing a bit small。 I loved the fox spirits!
